Zadar

It is the centre of modern Zadar (Zara in Italian) and the wider northern Dalmatian region. Zadar is located opposite the islands of Ugljan and Pašman, from which it is separated by the narrow Zadar Strait. The promontory on which the old city stands used to be separated from the mainland by a deep moat which has since become a landfill. The harbor, to the north-east of the town, is safe and spacious.

7/3/2017-Don't depend on the Zadar police department for either efficiency or courtesy. Two officers responded to a traffic accident yesterday to file a police report. One was courteous and translated, the older officer seemed to be running the show. This older officer would not look you in the eye, and would not listen to any translation. That was the good part. I had to get into a police van to sign some papers as he yelled at me in Croation. I finally left the van to ask the younger officer to translate ( I tried talking English and German to the irate office, he became even angrier when I asked if he spoke German). Turns out he went ballistic about asking my deceased dad's first name! In the end they didn't file any report and said they couldn't give a copy of any document I signed. Wonderful experience with these jerks.
